The Necroa Virus is a special plague added to the game in 2013 for Mutation 1.5, it is characterized by possessing cytopathic properties that can reaminated bodies of previously infected people and turn them into zombies, these possess special abilities that help to coordinate attacks towards the healthy population, as well as putrefactive and liquefactive resistances that allow the zombies' bodies to survive for much longer.

This special plague possesses aggressive metabolic demands, and "extreme regenerative capabilities." Notably, it has the ability to create mindless, hostile zombies from deceased hosts. These regenerative abilities can drastically alter human behaviour, causing that when the disease is discovered, much of the scientific community will be concerned with finding a cure as early as possible, which consequently will cause much of the world to close all types of borders and transportation to prevent the spread of the virus.[4]

Additionally, the Necroa Virus possesses the ability to also infect different species of animals, causing them to alter their behaviour so that they can attack the human population. This will cause a considerable increase in infection but will also increase the severity and lethality of the disease, and there is a possibility that humans could develop a cure much more quickly following research on infected animal populations.[Note 1]

Game overview

Traits

Report on initial research on Necroa Virus suggests pathogen may cause tumours causing concern for spread of disease

Necroa Virus traits are mainly characterized by the presence of transmissions that use body fluids in order to spread to new hosts, where it is necessary to evolve these type of traits involving the spread of the pathogen through the contact with Infected Blood and Saliva in order to unlock Air and Water transmissions respectively.

The Necroa Virus itself is very easy to cure in general due to lacking certain countermeasures and with its relatively lower cure requirement. This is countered by Cytopathic Reanimation, which causes any dead infected person thereafter to have the chance to reanimate as a zombie. Zombies cannot be cured, but are able to continue the fight directly by killing the remaining population, possibly converting them into even more zombies. This symptom leads to various abilities and symptoms that will increase the effectiveness, or severity of the zombies, improving the odds of victory even with cure completion. It is useful to evolve this at before 85%, as more time means more zombies available.

Zombie Attacks

Failed evacuation of the capital city causes zombies to massacre large part of country's population

After the evolution of Cytopathic Reanimation, the pathogen will cause part of the infected population to become zombies, additionally it is necessary to evolve traits such as Anaerobic Resuscitation to help increase the chance of infected people becoming zombies instead of them dying instantly from the disease, this makes it possible to help accumulate much more zombies in a short period of time. In case the player doesn't evolve Anaerobic Resuscitation in time, there is a chance that the amount of zombies will be much smaller, helping the humans to isolate them from healthy people and kill them quickly.

In extreme cases, certain countries will do everything possible to eradicate the growing zombie population, including the use of nuclear weapons.

During the course of the zombification process, there is a possibility that zombies could arrive in several waves and quickly massacre some of the healthy people in the capital city of a country affected by the disease if the local government does not evacuate immediately.

Human Defense

Z Com will initially establish a base will be installed in a random country. As time elapses, Z Com bases become stronger and will even expand their influence with more bases around the globe, leaving them a prominent and constant threat.

Zombies in a destroyed country starve and die quickly, so Zombie Horde should be used to move them. This is indicated by a zombie bubble. To ensure they can take on a base and overwhelm it without losing too much DNA, it is advisable to at least have a sizable amount of zombie strength symptoms and every possible horde size upgrade at this point. Once Z Com is eliminated, and all humans are either killed or turned into zombies, the game ends and the player wins.

Origin Stories

There are also hidden in-game origin stories of the Necroa Virus.

  • If Egypt is infected first, a popup can appear saying that explorers are going deeper into the newly-discovered tombs of Giza (the player must evolve Saliva 1 and Heat Resistance 1 within the first 70 days). The hieroglyphics will warn the explorers of an ancient plague capable of destroying humanity. The mummy excavated will have "strange bite marks." When zombies infect the world, a news headline will pop up saying that the Necroa Virus may have come from the Pyramid of Giza, indicating that the Necroa Virus is much older than Patient Zero.
  • If the USA is infected first, a popup can appear saying that DarkWater (a private military company) is missing a scientist, meaning that Patient Zero could be this scientist (the player must evolve Saliva 1 and Drug Resistance 1 within the first 70 days). Later on, other popups will say that DarkWater has created the Necroa Virus as a biological weapon, and another one saying that they are planning to make a kind of "zombie pacifier."
  • If a player infects the UK first, it can say that PfiGlax (a pharmaceutical company) made the Necroa Virus as a means to cure AIDS (the player must evolve Saliva 1 and Segmented Genome within the first 70 days).
  • Lastly, if the Plague is started in Ukraine, a popup can appear saying that a Chernobyl tourist was attacked by an unknown animal, implying that Patient Zero is the tourist. Later on, theories will begin circulating that the Necroa Virus was created by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The player must evolve Saliva 1 and Zoonotic Shift within the first 70 days in order to trigger this series of events.

Each of the storylines will have three achievements for completing it.

Notes

  1. It is confirmed in the Chernobyl origin story that humans will try to find a cure based on the infected animals (See In-Game Screenshots for the Events that happen in Ukraine), in addition to the fact that this corroborates the reason why Zoonotic Shift makes the disease easier to research when it is evolved.
