Cure Mode is a game mode introduced in Mutation 1.18,[1] it is characterised by being the opposite of Main Game, where the player has to lead an international health organisation and find a possible vaccine for an outbreak, in order to fulfil this objective it is necessary to employ Field Operatives who will be in charge of going by planes and ships to other countries to detect new diseases, subsequently targeted quarantines can be decreed to certain regions of the world where all international transport can be blocked immediately in order to prevent the disease from reaching other regions.
In mid-November 2020, Ndemic Creations officially launched this mode for mobile devices.[2] At the end of January 2021, the Cure Mode was introduced to the PC version of the game.[3] Later in February 2021, “Disease X” was added to the PC version of Cure Mode.[4] This game mode was created with the help of experts at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO)[5] in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, where the DLC was originally free until the disease had been controlled. In early July 2022, the Cure Mode DLC became a paid expansion.[6]
Each pathogen in this mode has different mechanics at the moment of being treated where it is sometimes necessary to perform a preliminary analysis in order to start the vaccine development.
Within this mode, the research mechanic is introduced, where the player can use research teams to explore different countries in order to establish a tracking system to detect new disease outbreaks. It is necessary for the player to try to cover a lot of ground, especially to deal with outbreaks of pathogens such as fungus, which have spores that can reach distant regions, so it is important to establish a lot of checkpoints in different countries.
The player can help maximise this process through operations such as the Outbreak Intelligence Unit that will improve the speed of disease monitoring station establishments.
Control
Authority plays a crucial role in this mode, which is the main mechanic that helps determine the general public's perception of the player's actions. It is affected by different factors such as the sudden spread of the disease to new regions, the collapse of the health system due to a large death toll in the affected countries as well as high rates of Non-Compliance which cause a large section of the population to not comply with quarantines.
Quarantine
One of the measures the player can take to contain outbreaks in certain regions of the world is through different types of quarantines from national to continental, where the player can block land borders as well as seaports and international airports. As well as enacting lockdowns to partially reduce the rate of infection in affected nations.
However, one of the key factors hindering the effectiveness of these actions is the rate of Non-Compliance, where people will not take the disease seriously if they do not implement financial support measures beforehand.[7] This plays a major role in dealing with diseases such as Virus where people will initially not take the disease seriously, and it is necessary to start a public awareness campaign about the disease to make part of society take quarantines more seriously and thus lower the level of Non-Compliance in affected nations.
Research
The complexity of a disease can cause problems when investigating it for the first time.
The player can start the cure process through Vaccine Research, and can boost its speed through the incorporation of various operations that help increase vaccine development and manufacturing. Some pathogens such as Parasite require prior analysis before Vaccine Research can be executed. This analysis process may take some time, and while it is being executed, the player will have limited options since he will not be able to fund operations while this process is being performed. An alternative to accelerate this process is the use of a specialized Task Force, such as “Molecular Biologist”.
The Task Force is the equivalent of Genetic Code for Cure Mode, players can recruit one of the members from their Task Force before they start their game. These advisers can help the vaccine development to be faster, better control the lockdown, prevent the plague from spreading to other countries.
Quarantines are measures unique to Cure Mode that allow the player to control the transportation routes of a country, allowing to isolate specific regions or to decree disease prevention and alert measures through prolonged quarantines, although these may cause an increase in Non-compliance, if the country does not take the necessary economic measures for the civilian population.
The player has the possibility to return the quarantine measures in case they are not needed in a specific region. Additionally there are quarantine measures that affect only one specific country, rather than the entire continent where it is located.
Responses are one of the unique mechanics introduced in Cure Mode, where the player can control outbreaks by taking actions that can improve the healthcare system by distributing medicines and strengthening hospitals.
Some plagues require the acquisition of responses more urgently, such as Prion, high priority should be given to measures that can reduce the disease's lethality, in order to prevent the country's health system from collapsing.
Within the responses, measures can be found to reduce both infectivity and lethality, as well as extensive monitoring to prevent the disease from being easily spread to other countries, in addition to measures that can increase the country's capacity to conduct medical testing.
Operations are one of the mechanics introduced in Cure Mode, their main purpose is to adapt society when a new outbreak starts to spread in different countries. These include measures to secure the player's authority, in addition to actions that help to manage the economic situation of a specific country to avoid non-compliance, as well as to improve the equipment of Field Operatives.
Special operations are extra measures that players have when dealing with a specific outbreak, because certain pathogens have special abilities that make them difficult to contain, so the player will have to use them to greatly reduce both infectivity and lethality.

Achievements
Combos
During the course of the game, there is the possibility that a certain combination of responses and operations will cause certain events or "combos" that may or may not help the player.
Video Call Software - (Note: This event refers to the Zoom software. This is a random event that is obtained if the global priority is greater than or equal to 15 and less than 50, and there must be at least 8 countries in lockdown.)
Frozen Virus is the only disease from the official scenarios that appears in Cure Mode, characterised by attacking particularly cold countries, requiring DNA analysis to unlock responses and other measures to contain it.
«While scientific input was garnered from CEPI and other infectious disease experts, it is worth highlighting that Plague Inc: The Cure does not provide 100% accurate or realistic scenarios to the steps needed to be taken to end a pandemic threat, and the speed and scale at which they can be achieved. It is a game, not a scientific simulation.»
— Ndemic Creations Press Release (2020)
The default disease name in cure mode is PAX-19, reusing PAX-12 (trailer/default disease name in standard mode) whilst referencing COVID-19.
Cure Mode currently does not feature any Special Plagues.
