Main Game - Cure Mode - Speed Run

Prion is a standard game disease in Plague Inc. characterized by significantly altering the way neurons function, causing certain tasks to become much more complicated to perform such as research and cure development. These special abilities allow the plague to survive for a much longer period of time than others, mainly used to achieve time-consuming events such as Nuclear Retaliation and Plague in Space.

Description

Main Game

One of the characteristics of this type of pathogen is the incorporation of several abilities that help to counteract the progress of the cure, these are Neural Atrophy that caused a deterioration in a large part of the cells of people who have the disease. Neural Atrophy traits function in a similar and slightly more passive manner to Genetic Hardening abilities.

Consequently, this caused performing certain complex tasks to become much slower and more difficult, including disease research processes. This makes Prion one of the standard pathogens with the greatest ability to resist cure, which helps in having to survive for a long period of time before having to completely extinguish mankind.

Furthermore, Prion is one of the standard plagues where acquiring DNA points is possible after devolving symptoms. For this reason, genes such as Ionised Helix are useful to take advantage of this plague's characteristics.[1]

Cure Mode

In this mode, Prion is characterized as one of the diseases where it spreads rapidly, making it necessary to implement quarantines by continent. In addition to the fact that one of the obstacles to eradicating prion is that nations with a large number of infected people cannot contribute to the development of the vaccine, it is possible to counteract such effects after the implementation of various operations. This is especially detrimental in the event that a prion outbreak has broken out in a wealthy country, so much progress for the vaccine will be lost if such a country is affected.[2]

Another key point of this plague is that it undergoes a process of incubation before becoming lethal, which causes patients to have a short period of life left, in the event that this happens, the resurgence of a large number of deaths in a country will cause the rapid deterioration of the authority.[3]

The player can use operations to lengthen the incubation process of the prion in addition to reassure the infected population to prevent them from panicking and generating a deterioration of authority.

Special Abilities

Neural Atrophy 1-3: Special operation in the Main Game, which makes the disease more difficult to investigate by causing damage to the neurons of the infected population.

Special Operations

  • RapidAnalysis.png
Rapid Analysis:This operation helps to make the analysis of the disease even faster.
  • NeuralEnhancers.png
Neural Enhancers: It helps the countries infected by the disease to continue contributing to the cure
  • ReassureInfected1.png
Reassure Infected 1-2: These operations help the player's authority to be maintained and not be so affected when people start to panic about the disease.

Extend Incubation 1-2: They helps to delay the time in which the prion becomes terminal.

Trivia

  • Due to the cure resistance abilities, it is generally used to obtain the "Nuclear Retaliation" and "Plague in Space" achievements, stalling the cure long enough for them to hopefully trigger, especially on easier difficulties where even other plagues might struggle.
  • Prions can't be cured in real life because they are malfunctioning proteins, they don't possess DNA or RNA, in addition that they don't evolve in the same way as other pathogens. In the Mad Cow Disease scenario, which reused part of the code to implement Prion, a mention is made about the fact that prions are incurable, but within the game's narrative, the world's scientists have found a way to find prions by finding exploits in their novel genetic structure.[4]
  • Devolving Neural Atrophy will cause the cure effort to speed up, if it exists.
  • In early versions of the game, icon for Prion used to be structure of brain.

Cure Mode Traits

Main Article: Cure Mode
  1. Diarrhoea: Pathogen active in digestive tract, causing infection through faeces and potentially lethal dehydration
  2. Coma: Neuropathic effects in the brain stem cause loss of consciousness and sometimes death
  3. Fever: Increase in temperature, contagiousness and severe dehydration, which can be fatal
  4. Terminal Disease: Very low chance to recover from the disease
  5. Insanity: Neuropathic action of the pathogen in the frontal cortex causes severe emotional and behavioural abnormalities
  6. Long Incubation: Very slow disease progression, takes a long time before recovery or death
  7. Sneezing: Fluid discharge through sneezing greatly increases infection rates
