Coma is a lethal symptom of the branch that affects the neurological system, it is available in the Standard Plagues as well as the Neurax Worm, Necroa Virus and Simian Flu in addition to the Black Death, Nipah Virus and Mad Cow Disease scenarios. It has neuropathic effects in the brain stem, which causes loss of consciousness and death.

Coma combined with other similar symptoms such as Paralysis and Insanity, are mainly intended to reduce the progress of the cure and make research work more difficult than increasing lethality or infection. Therefore, they are used for this purpose, especially in long games that require waiting too long for certain events but at the same time try to reduce as much as possible any cure effort in order to obtain enough time.

Coma is notable for being the symptom in the game that most significantly reduces the cure progress. Furthermore, the symptom mainly increases the severity rate and slightly increases the lethality in standard plagues. Other variations of this symptom in special plagues slightly increase the lethality rate of this symptom, such as the variants for Simian Flu and Neurax Worm.

Variants

Neurax Worm

« Mature Tendrils constrict the brain stem and cause a loss of consciousness in the host. Potentially fatal and significantly harder to cure »
— Official In-Game Description in Neurax Worm

The variant of this symptom for this particular plague is mainly characterized by the tendrils of the larvae beginning to mature, it constricts part of the infected person's brain causing loss of consciousness. Unlike the normal variant of this symptom in the Standard Plagues, this one is slightly more lethal.

Necroa Virus

« Pressure buildup in the brain stem can cause loss of consciousness. Significantly slows future research speed but reduces infection rates »
— Official In-Game Description in Necroa Virus

The variant of this symptom for this special plague is characterized mainly by reducing the infectivity rate,[1] and it is a non-lethal trait. Additionally, it possesses properties that help to slow down the speed of research as well as the progress made towards a cure. This helps in obtaining achievements such as Not Another Zombie Game that require annihilating humanity through the normal traits of the Virus without having to transform them into zombies.[2]

Nipah Virus

In this scenario, it is necessary to previously evolve the Encephalitic Shift special ability to unlock Coma as well as symptoms that affect the person's brain capacity.

Trivia

  • In Nano-Virus, Coma, Insomnia, Paranoia and Paralysis have 0 base cost.
  • In the Black Death scenario, it is already evolved at the start of the game.
